Moses is about my cat, Mosie. And further, about serendipity. Following my experience told in Without, a 7-week old kitten with six toes on each paw appeared on my back porch. The circumstances surrounding her finding were too serindipitous to ignore, as was her naming. Not knowing whether she was a boy or girl, my wife recommended we name her ‘Moses’, after the biblical figure, found as a baby amongst the reeds of the Nile. This was strange, as my wife never attended church, even in childhood.

I took it as a sign, and painted her in Gateway, CO, as a sister-painting to Without. The middle ground contains our first house, the one Mosie found. The shape of tablets appear in the trees, by her namesake; just like Moses could not carry G-d down the mountain, only his impression in stone; so, too, are my paintings not a divine experience, but the impression of one in paint.
